at its best
Our family-owned company has been making underwear and clothing for 85 years. By using untreated cotton in 1982 the company started to concentrate on natural textiles in an exemplary and consistent way.
Today, our collection covers underwear and clothing for babies and kids, underwear for adults, a small range of outerwear in pure merino wool or merino wool and silk for children and adults, fleece clothing in soft, cosy merino wool for babies, children and adults and specially developed garments for prematures.
Besides organic cotton we use the finest organic merino virgin wool and natural organic merino virgin wool with silk. All the dyestuffs we use are free from heavy metals and have always been free from harmful AZO-dyes. For colouring our woollen textiles we use only reactive dye, which compounds particularly well with fibre and stands out for its excellent fastness. We abstain from any kind of chemical finishing with our textile processing.
Basically all used agents should be bio-degradable and must not pollute soil, air and water. All the materials used are nickel-free, and our buttons are made from natural, renewable raw materials. In order to guarantee our high quality level certain requirements have to met such as: light fastness, resistance to spittle, fastness to perspiration, washing and shrinking.
We have these properties, along with the maximum residue limits for substances harmful to health and the environment, monitored at regular intervals by independent certified environmental laboratories and institutes.
Our corporate philosophy, which we have pursued from the start, is to provide our customers with high-quality, ecologically compatible feel-good products which we can sell and they can buy with a clear conscience and out of conviction.
As an obvious consequence of this, we not only use renewable raw materials for our products and make sure that the finished garments contain no pollutants; we also avoid the use completely of substances that are harmful to health or the environment during the entire garment production process. Waste is avoided wherever possible.
We are committed to fair, safe employment for a fair wage, not only in our own company but throughout all the production stages.
Our sustainable production concept also includes generating the power we need from renewable energy sources, such as solar and hydraulic power.

We care about our environment
Engel underwear and clothing is sustainably produced in Germany. Short transport routes are just as important to us as ecological manufacturing processes.
Our underwear is manufactured in Germany according the highest ecological and social criteria. Our short transport routes not only protect the environment – they also allow continuous quality management and guarantee fast, reliable, complete delivery as promised.
Most products bear the quality seal NATURTEXTIL- IVN ZERTIFIZIERT BEST or the Global Organic Textile Standard logo. This is particularly important for us. You will find the product label including the licence number on the product itself.
As a founding member of what is now the Internationaler Verband der Naturtextilwirtschaft e.V. (IVN), and co-initiator of the Global International Textile Standard (GOTS) we are still committed to high ecological and social quality standards. Engel is one of the first 27 German companies to be certified according to ”Grüner Knopf” criteria.
The “NATURTEXTIL IVN zertifiziert BEST” – IVN BEST - quality symbol is awarded to textiles that are made completely from organically produced natural fibres. The certification takes into account all the environmental effects of the entire production process, from cultivation of the fibres to the finished garment, along with the prescribed social welfare standards in the companies involved in the process.
In terms of environmental compatibility, social sustainability and credibility, IVN BEST meets the highest ecological standards that can currently be achieved in the textile industry.
Textiles that are made from at least 70% to 100% organically produced natural fibres are eligible for the award of the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). Certification of products is based on fulfilment of environmental requirements along the entire textile production chain plus compliance with social welfare criteria. The GOTS standards are slightly below the IVN BEST standards.
The “Grüner Knopf” is a German government textile seal; in terms of product criteria, it builds on existing certifications, such as GOTS or IVN BEST. Unlike IVN BEST and GOTS, it does not take account of all production stages along the entire textile production chain.
In contrast to other certifications, however, the “Grüner Knopf” scheme lays down corporate due diligence obligations, i.e. certified companies must take social responsibility by being aware of the risks to human rights in their supplier companies, reporting on them – and eliminating them.
