This is where the TOG value comes in – a measure of the thermal resistance of textiles that provides guidance for sleeping bags.
We at ENGEL explain what the TOG value means, where you can find it and which values are suitable for your baby and when – including a clear table and specific examples from our range.
Important: every child is different. The TOG value table is a guide, but it does not replace of your baby (hands, neck, behaviour).
How can I tell if my baby is too warm or too cold in their sleeping bag?
These simple observations will help you find out if your baby is dressed appropriately:
Checking temperature via the neck
Feel your baby's neck with your hand:
- Warm but dry = everything is fine.
- Damp or sweaty = dressed too warmly.
- Cold = probably too cool.
Signs of cold:
- Cold hands and feet are not indicative – babies often have poorer blood circulation there.
- If your baby seems restless, fidgety or cries after a short time, this may be a sign of hypothermia.
- Sleep interruptions for no apparent reason may also be related to cold.
Signs of overheating:
- Damp neck, forehead or back
- Reddened skin or heat rash
- Reluctance to drink, apathy or unusually deep sleep can also be signs of overheating – in this case: cool down, but slowly, and seek medical advice.
Important: It is better to be slightly too cool than too warm – overheating is considered a risk factor for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
Where can I find the TOG value on a sleeping bag?
If a sleeping bag is classified according to TOG, you will usually find the value:
- on the label inside
- in the product description in the online shop
- or in the packaging/insert of the product
At ENGEL, we state the TOG value directly in the item description, provided that a corresponding measurement is available.
TOG values at a glance
The following table shows you which TOG values are suitable for which room temperatures and what clothing your baby can wear underneath:
