Sustainability in clothing – what we mean by it at ENGEL
Anyone who wants to buy sustainable clothing expects more than just a green label. But what does sustainable textile production actually mean – and how can you be sure that ecological and social standards are actually being met? At ENGEL, sustainability is not a marketing promise, but a responsibility we live by: from the fibre to the final seam. Our textiles are manufactured according to strictly controlled standards at our premises in Pfullingen (Baden-Württemberg) and within a 50 km radius – and around 95% of our range carries renowned quality labels such as GOTS or NATURTEXTIL IVN CERTIFIED BEST.
Fairly produced in Baden-Württemberg – with social responsibility
All ENGEL products are manufactured under fair working conditions in Germany.
In order for a product to be GOTS or IVN certified, clear social criteria must be met in addition to ecological requirements. These are based on the core standards of the International Labour Organisation (ILO):
- Prohibition of child labour and forced labour
- No discrimination or abuse
- Fair and living wages
- Compliance with occupational health and safety regulations
- Freedom of association and collective bargaining rights
These requirements are regularly and independently audited – and apply to all stages of production.
Two quality labels, one high standard: GOTS and IVN BEST
ENGEL uses two of the strictest and internationally recognised standards to certify its products:
1. GOTS – Global Organic Textile Standard

GOTS is the world's best-known label for organic textiles. It guarantees holistic sustainable production – from fibre extraction to garment manufacturing.
GOTS requirements at a glance:
- At least 70% fibres from certified organic cultivation or agriculture
- Maximum 10% synthetic fibres (25% for socks and sportswear)
- Prohibition of genetic engineering, chemical fertilisers and pesticides
- Strict guidelines for dyeing, printing and finishing
- No chlorine bleach, optical brighteners or toxic dyes
In addition, GOTS products are subject to residue limits for a large number of substances that are harmful to health and the environment. Accessories such as zips, cords and linings must also be environmentally friendly and skin-friendly.
2. NATURTEXTIL IVN ZERTIFIZIERT BEST – der Premium-Standard

This quality mark is considered the strictest and most comprehensive sustainability seal worldwide. ENGEL products certified with IVN BEST not only meet GOTS requirements, but go significantly beyond them.
What makes IVN BEST special:
- 100% fibres from certified organic cultivation or animal husbandry
- No exceptions for chemical additives or synthetic components
- Stricter positive list for dyes (e.g. no copper, no optical brighteners)
- No viscose content in ingredients (e.g. inserts, embroidery threads, ribbons)
- Prohibition of mercerisation of cotton (chemical gloss finishing)
All production steps are documented in a fully traceable manner – from the raw fibre to the end product.
What sustainability means in concrete terms at ENGEL
ENGEL goes far beyond the minimum legal standards in its implementation of sustainable principles.
In practice, this means:
- Production exclusively in Germany – under fair, controlled conditions
- Use of organic virgin wool and cotton from certified organic agriculture
- Use of non-toxic, biodegradable additives
- Gentle processing without aggressive chemicals
- High-quality, durable products with high wearing comfort
For ENGEL, sustainability also means responsibility towards people, animals and the environment – throughout the entire value creation chain.
Conclusion: Sustainability in clothing is not an add-on, but the core of our brand
Whether you buy a baby bodysuit, a wool fleece jacket or a wool/silk shirt – with an ENGEL product, you are choosing genuine natural textiles, certified responsibility and uncompromising production.
Our quality marks are not empty promises, but binding standards – controlled, credible and traceable.
